Two massive Jupiter-sized exoplanets discovered using TESS

Using the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an international team of astronomers has discovered two new extrasolar planets. The newly discovered alien worlds, designated TOI-5152 b and TOI-5153 b, are the size of Jupiter but about three times as massive as the solar system’s largest planet. The find is reported on July 8 in the arXiv preprint repository.

TESS is surveying about 200,000 of the brightest stars near the Sun to look for transiting exoplanets. It has identified over 5,700 candidate exoplanets (TESS or TOI objects of interest), of which 227 have been confirmed so far.

A team of astronomers led by Solen Ulmer-Moll of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland recently confirmed the presence of two more TOI planets controlled by TESS. They report that transit signals have been identified in the light curves of two stars known as TOI-5152 and TOI-5153. The planetary nature of these signals was confirmed by subsequent observations.

“The photometry of the discovery was collected using the TESS space mission, and subsequent observations were made from the ground using the NGTS photometric facility and the CORALIE, FEROS, CHIRON, HARPS and TRES high-resolution spectrographs,” the researchers said. wrote in the newspaper.

TOI-5152 b has a radius of about 1.07 Jupiter radii and is about three times as massive as Jupiter. It orbits its parent star every 54.19 days at a distance of about 0.31 AU. from her. The equilibrium temperature of the planet was 688 K. The host of TOI-5152 is a G1 class star, almost twice the size of the Sun, located at a distance of about 1200 light-years from Earth. Its age is estimated to be between 1.4 and 6.8 billion years.

TOI-5153 b has a mass of 3.26 Jupiter masses and an estimated radius of 1.06 Jupiter radii. The orbital period of this exoplanet is 20.33 days, and the distance to the host is almost 0.16 AU. Astronomers have calculated that the equilibrium temperature of TOI-5153 b is at the level of 906 K. The parent star belongs to the spectral class F8. It is about 40% larger than the Sun and is thought to be 5.4 billion years old. The distance to this planetary system is about 1270 light years.

Thus, TOI-5152 b and TOI-5153 b are warm and massive alien worlds the size of Jupiter. Astronomers noted that they are both enriched in metals, and the content of heavy elements in them is consistent with the ratio of mass and metallicity of gas giants. Given that the two planets orbit moderately bright stars, the paper’s authors added that they are ideal targets for additional observations.

“Both warm Jupiters orbit moderately bright parent stars, making these objects valuable targets for future studies of the planetary atmosphere and measurement of the system’s rotation angle,” the researchers concluded.
