Chef Justin Sutherland was hospitalized on Sunday after a boating accident broke his jaw and arm and suffered lacerations to his body.

The Southern-raised restaurateur from Minnesota was traveling with friends wearing his favorite captain’s hat when it was ripped off and fell into the water trying to retrieve it.

“The propeller left a mark on his head and left arm. His arm is broken but his grip remains firm and it looks like the nerves are intact,” wrote Justin’s friend Beth Gillis.

“His jaw is badly broken, but the doctors hope that after several surgeries he will soon start smiling. In addition to his broken bones, he received numerous lacerations, but thanks to plastic surgery, they will become a reminder of his story of survival.

“The good news is that he will be all right. After a while, he might be better than okay. He gives more character to the face we know and love, and the big news is that his beard is intact.”

Because Sutherland had no health insurance, Gillis and four others close to him set up GoFundMe to help pay for his medical and other expenses, and as of press time, he has raised more than $106,000 of a $500,000 goal.

The Taste the Culture host has a long road to recovery after having his jaw closed with wire and will have to undergo several more surgeries.
