Last TWD Spinoff will present an epic love story of two characters who have been changed by a changed world. Separated by distance. Irresistible force. Ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne find themselves in another world built on a war with the dead… And, ultimately, a war with the living. Can they find each other and find themselves in a place and situation unlike anything they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Winners? Are they alive without each other – or will they discover that they, too, are the walking dead?
The original plan was to complete Rick’s story in a standalone film by Universal Studios; sources say the studio has spoken to Craig Zobel about the production. But Lincoln confirmed today that those plans have been shelved and the network is now closing his story with a series. “I can’t wait to put on my cowboy boots again,” he said.
Nearing the end of the 11th and final season, Walking Dead is the first installment in a post-apocalyptic zombie franchise based on the comic books of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. In it, the survivors of an apocalyptic event struggle with the near-constant threat of an onslaught of zombies called “walkers” in the midst of a collapsed civilization.
Lincoln’s character is a sheriff who led a group of survivors on the show for the first nine seasons. He is presumed dead by his clan members in the fifth episode of season 9 “What Comes After” after he blew up a bridge with dynamite to repel hordes of walkers. Although he subsequently disappears, we eventually learn that he actually survived as he takes off in a helicopter with Ann (Pollyanna McIntosh) and her allies.
Michonne of Gurira is a katana-wielding survivor first introduced in the third season who joins Grimes’ group and eventually falls in love with him, becoming a surrogate mother to his children. The character last appeared in season 10, going in search of Rick after learning that he may have survived his near-fatal injury in season 9.
“This is the moment when the fans Walking Dead been waiting since Rick disappeared in a helicopter at the start of Season 9 and Michonne went looking for him next season,” said Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “What a big surprise for fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched this universe and made television history. We are very excited about the truly epic series finale later this year and the return of Andy and Danae in the new series they helped create, one of three new series coming out in 2023 that will continue the stories of so many iconic and fan-made characters. Darling TWD characters.”
“Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danay and Andy are two of my favorite people,” Gimple said in a statement. “Working with all of them is still a dream. The three of us, along with an amazing cast of TWD stars and amazing new voices, are creating an insane love epic that is well worth the long, long wait.”
