Steve from Minecraft has been a pretty controversial topic in the Smash community lately. Players such as FTG|Acola and IE|Onin have performed exceptionally well in recent Super Smash Bros. tournaments. Ultimate, which is one of the reasons why there was discussion about Steve’s potential event ban.
Is Steve really becoming such a big problem in the competitive scene that the character needs to be banned? Recently, I was looking for an answer to this question by reaching out to professional players and other well-known members of the community.
Of those I contacted, I received responses from T1|McLeoliquid|Dabuz, VendettaPG|Esam and ASUS|Mr. R. I also contacted VGBC|GimR who noted that he was too busy to give a detailed answer, but informed me that there are currently no plans to ban Steve or Kazuya from Video Game Boot Camp events.
In the meantime, let’s hear what the pros have to say about Steve. Next time we will get the same player thoughts on the ban discussion as Kazuya Mishima.
Adaptive trigger: What are your thoughts on the discussion about Steve being kicked out of Super Smash Bros. tournaments? ultimate? Is Steve a character that deserves a ban?
McLeo: What do I think about Steve getting banned? I dont know. I feel like he’s just a character that doesn’t respect the physics of Smash, but other than that I think he’s ok.
There are a lot of things that make studying his matchup weird, but I don’t think he’s unbeatable or anything, so I don’t care if he gets banned or not.
Dabuz: Nope. Bans are pretty stupid, I won’t lie.
Vendetta: Steve is a character unlike anyone else in this game. He offers a completely different point of view.
Its tools are definitely questionable as its resources force players to approach the game from a whole new perspective. It’s a somewhat toxic style of play, and I sympathize with anyone who disagrees with his participation in the competition.
However, this should be studied in more detail. I personally feel that most people don’t play properly and force their usual game plans on someone who just isn’t going to.
We as a community need to toughen up and sort out this conflict, because in its current form, most of the community will complain rather than find a solution, which is an unfortunate circumstance.
Esam: I think the discussion only hurts the scene. It hurts Steve’s players, it angers the mid-level players because the best players have a lot of power and it just bleeds all over the place.
The character isn’t even the best. He doesn’t ruin the gameplay, and he’s only the seventh or so most popular character.
It also just won’t happen at any major, so it just makes Twitter more toxic and the locals more toxic to Steve Maines.
Mr R: Personally, I think Steve has the best chance of being #1 in the game right now. That being said, I don’t think the ban on the character is justified yet.
The character is not dominant enough to the point that it deserves a ban. We also need more time to develop counterplay first.
Perhaps in a few months I will change my position on this matter, but now I am.
GimR: I don’t think video game boot camp will ban any character (Steve or Kazuya) from any of our activities for the foreseeable future. They do not currently meet the criteria.
