“If he’s outstanding, then he can be a leader.”
The footage was released to commemorate the 12th anniversary of One Direction, which was formed on the show after each member initially unsuccessfully auditioned as a solo artist. However, the timing is particularly relevant this year given Liam Payne’s recent comments about the formation of the 1D.
There is some important context here. Liam auditioned for the first time x factor back in 2008 and made it to Simon Cowell’s house when he was just 14 years old. However, Simon did not believe he was ready at the time and told him to go back to school and re-audition for the show. two more years later.
Speaking on Logan Paul’s podcast last month, Liam said: “From what I’ve heard, part of the reason for creating One Direction was Simon’s promise to me, ‘In two years, I’ll do this job for you.’ ‘ So he started with my face and then worked on the rest… I was an honorary member of One Direction. He himself told me this story at home.”
The comments went viral and even Lizzo chimed in on her TikTok saying “I don’t know who lied to that poor boy but he was No frontman.”
So what do these new footage show? The 2010 clip begins with the judges looking through a stack of images of the male contestants, deciding which ones can be together in “imaginary” groups. Subsequently, we see Nicole Scherzinger move Niall’s photo to the top of the table.
“We liked him,” Louis says enthusiastically about young Harry, to which Nicole offers to bet him with Niall.
“They are the cutest boy band!” Nicole adds when Louis’ photo is added to the stack. “Little girls will love them.”
“They are too talented to get rid of them. And they have the right look and the right charisma on stage,” she continues. “They’re like little stars, so you can’t get rid of the little stars – you have to put them together.”
Then it comes to a photo of Liam. “He was outstanding at the audition,” Simon begins, before pointing to a group of boys selected for individual promotion. “Don’t you think he should be there?”
“I don’t think so,” Nicole replies. “If he’s outstanding, then he can be a leader.”
To this, Simon replies, “He thinks he’s the best on this list.”
“No, Simon. He is confident. But he’s good, he’s consistent,” says Louis Walsh in turn, before all the judges are amazed at how good the four boys look together.
Judge Louie then proposes Zane for the group, to which everyone immediately agrees. In Simon’s words: “Now what it’s a good idea!”
“That’s the category I want, them,” he continues, which will eventually turn out to be true – Simon acted as a mentor in the group category that year (and later signed them after the show).
So what does this mean for Liam’s recent statements? Well, the idea that One Direction “began with [his] face” seems not very accurate, judging by the clip – this is Niall’s face, not Liam’s, this is the initial brick. However, I think we can still appreciate two things with confidence: 1) Simon was really supportive of Liam when it came to staying in the house. show, according to his earlier “promise” 2) It looks like Liam was originally considered the leader of the group.
