Bye this whole NFT thing seems to be mercifully on the refuses, there are still companies out there—like Square Enix— trying to justify partnering with a technology that exists solely as a grand scam. Mojang is clearly not one of them.

In a lengthy statement published on minecraft websitethe team explains in great detail why they have not yet implemented this technology and why they have taken steps to ban any implementation of anything related to the blockchain in mine craft.

Including a brief caveat saying “Hey if blockchain can ever prove it’s anything other than a huge scam then maybe we’ll take a look at it, the bulk of the post is attacking techies for their promotion of ‘digital property’. based on scarcity and exclusion. , which does not match with mine craft values of creative inclusion and cooperative play.

It also explains why blockchain technology and NFTs have been outlawed throughout the game: “In order to provide Minecraft players with a secure and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client and server applications, and Minecraft cannot play content such as worlds, skins, character items, or other mods can be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset.”

You can read the policy in full below (emphasis on them, not mine).

OUR NFTS AND MINECRAFT POLICY

In our guidelines for using Minecraft, we describe how the server owner can charge for access and that all players should have access to the same features. We have these rules in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. However, NFTs can create scarcity and exclusion patterns that are against our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

In order to provide Minecraft players with a secure and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our client and server applications, and Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, character items, or other mods cannot be used to create a scarce digital asset. Our reasons follow.

Some companies have recently launched NFT implementations related to Minecraft world files and skin packs. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be used with Minecraft include creating collectible NFTs in Minecraft, allowing players to earn NFTs through activities performed on the server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities outside of the game.

Each of these applications of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates a digital property based on scarcity and exclusion, which is not in line with Minecraft’s values of creative inclusion and collaborative play. NFTs do not include our entire community and create a scenario for the haves and have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality of the NFT takes the focus away from the game and encourages profit making, which we believe is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players.

We are also concerned that some third party NFTs may be unreliable and costly to players who purchase them. Some third-party NFT implementations are also completely dependent on blockchain technology and may require an asset manager, which may disappear without notice. There have also been cases where NFTs have been sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices. We recognize that creativity within our game has intrinsic value and strive to create a market where these values can be recognized.

Thus, in order to provide Minecraft players with a safe and inclusive experience, Blockchain technologies may not be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications, nor may they be used to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, character items, or other mods.. We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are followed and to determine if it will enable more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive gaming applications. However, we currently have no plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft.

We hope to have more to share with you soon. In the meantime, if you are interested in our recommendations, you can find them here. Stay tuned!
