The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to replace the iPhone 13 Pro this fall and bring some exciting upgrades with it. The new Pro iPhones will likely retain features from last year’s models, including 120Hz displays and telephoto lenses, but judging by the leaks and rumors, there’s a lot more to come.
While we’re concerned about how boring the standard iPhone 14 can be, the iPhone 14 Pro could get things like a new punch-hole design, vastly improved cameras, an always-on display, and more. Unfortunately, this can come with the highest iPhone starting prices, so you’re better off saving if you’re tempted to buy one.
There’s still time before Apple’s September event (which we’ve heard could happen on September 13th), so for now, we’ve put together all the rumors we’ve heard so far to compare the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro.
Whether you’re looking to upgrade your iPhone 13 Pro, wondering which model to pick when both are available for purchase, or wondering how Apple can maintain its influence on our list of the best phones, this guide should help you figure it out.
iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro: Price
At $999/£949 and $1,099/£1,049 respectively, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are already quite expensive phones. But unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, according to several sources, there are rumors of a $100 price hike for both Pro phones.
Apple will likely stop selling the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max after the launch of the iPhone 14, as it did with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro in previous years. However, you’ll likely be able to find iPhone 13 Pro phones from third-party retailers and carriers for a while after they’re discontinued.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Design
Rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro say that the most obvious difference from the iPhone 13 Pro will be that the front notch will be replaced with separate cutouts for the selfie camera and Face ID sensors.
You can see what it might look like in the renders on this page or in these alleged images of the iPhone 14 series display panels. While the iPhone 13 series has reduced the size of the Face ID notch for the first time since its introduction on the iPhone X, the new cutout design in the form of ” Pills and Hole Punch” would return more screen space to real pixels, which would make it smaller. interferes when using the application in full screen mode.
We thought there would be a more obvious new look for the back of the iPhone 14 Pro, but now it looks like it will be basically the same as the iPhone 13 Pro. One subtle difference is that the already large rear camera bump can get even bigger to accommodate some rumored upgrades. As a result, cases for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max do not fit the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, judging by their diagrams.
The iPhone 14 Pro is still required to have a Lightning port rather than a USB-C port for power and data. However, this may change next year due to changes in EU legislation and demand for similar legislation in the US.
In terms of colors, the only noteworthy rumor is that this year’s unique iPhone color could be purple in a matte texture for the Pro models. Otherwise, we’ll probably see silver, gray, and gold again, with another color option likely coming in mid-2024, just like Apple did for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Display
Once again, we should see a Pro iPhone this year with a 6.1-inch display, and a Pro Max version with a 6.7-inch display. However, this description can be misleading as the screens may be slightly larger than the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max due to the reduced bezel sizes.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are the first to introduce 120Hz ProMotion adaptive displays for iPhone, making the display smoother and more energy efficient. Rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro say that it may get an improved version of this technology that can scale to 1Hz instead of 10Hz.
Not only would this mean lower power consumption, but it would also allow for the rumored always-on display of the iPhone 14 Pro, which Apple may also add. This will presumably let you see widgets like the ones you can add to your iOS 16 lock screen on your phone even when it’s locked, allowing you to quickly get handy updates.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Cameras
The iPhone 13 Pro used 12MP sensors for all four cameras, but the iPhone 14 Pro is reportedly getting a 48MP main camera for higher resolution or brighter images, depending on how Apple wants to set it up. We could also see 8K video recording from the iPhone 14 Pro, which will be a first for Apple.
The other rear cameras of the iPhone 14 Pro series – the ultra-wide camera and the telephoto lens – appear to be the same as the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple’s long-awaited first periscope camera is apparently not ready yet, so it will probably be another year or two before we see an iPhone with more than 3x zoom capabilities.
Meanwhile, on the front, the iPhone 14 Pro could get an improved selfie camera with a larger aperture and autofocus. This should make selfies brighter and clearer.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Chip and Performance
We should see the new A16 Bionic chipset running on show inside the iPhone 14 Pro, an update to the A15 Bionic iPhone 13 Pro. This new silicon is an upgrade that the regular iPhone 14 doesn’t seem to get, potentially making the gap between the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro wider than in previous years.
Estimated benchmarks for this new chip show an overall performance increase of around 5% over the iPhone 13 Pro, possibly due to Apple’s move to faster LPDDR5 RAM. The same source says that this new chip will also affect the iPhone’s camera capabilities and help improve the iPhone 14 Pro’s battery life.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Battery
We haven’t heard much about the batteries inside the new iPhone Pro models, but one source says the iPhone 14 Pro will supposedly get a capacity increase over the iPhone 13 Pro. However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max may receive a slight reduction compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the same source claims.
Sounds like bad news for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but hopefully it’s not. First, the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s battery life was already excellent, so a few milliamp-hours less shouldn’t make a big difference. In addition, Apple may have introduced other changes, such as a new chipset that will help the phone become more efficient, allowing it to last as long or longer than last year’s model.
None of the iPhone rumor mongers have made any new charging speed claims for the iPhone 14 series. Therefore, we expect the iPhone 14 Pro to use the same 20W wired charging technology and 15W MagSafe wireless charging as the iPhone 13 Pro. .
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Perspectives
The upgrade from iPhone 13 Pro to iPhone 14 Pro looks pretty dramatic. The new notch design, 48-megapixel camera, improved chipset, and improved always-on display certainly set the iPhone 14 Pro apart from its predecessor.
However, these changes may come with a literal cost, and raising prices in this economy doesn’t sound good. Also, we’re a bit concerned about the punch hole and pill-shaped notch, and that they’ll be more distracting than the current design.
