The amount of revelations MCU fans saw at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con still boggles the mind. From future project announcements to new trailers and exclusive first looks, there will be a lot of stuff that fans will be talking about for a long time (or at least until September’s D23 Expo). Some pieces were kept for visitors only, and one of them was a look at 2023. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania.
It’s standard practice for companies of all stripes to speak at Comic-Con, and word of mouth at the convention drops word of mouth to tell the rest of the world what they’ve seen. Sometimes these trailers open your eyes to new characters and locations, such as Secret Invasion trailer for Emilia Clarke’s character. quantum mania The Special Look gave viewers their first glimpse of Kang the Conqueror, which no doubt made those in attendance look forward to the full debut of the Warlord of the Multiverse in the film.
However, Kang wasn’t the only new character that fans looked up to. Beloved actor Bill Murray also appeared, confirming for the first time that he also stars in the Ant-Man triquel. For those who couldn’t make it to the convention, here’s what was missed.
Bill Murray to make his MCU debut in Quantumania
First look at Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania was screened exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con attendees on the Marvel’s Hall H mega-panel. When the panel was held, several media representatives were present in the room and one could get a glimpse of Bill Murray’s character in the upcoming film from them.
Yahoo Entertainment describes the trailer as seeing Ant-Man’s entire family sucked into the Quantum Realm, but not before Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang takes his daughter Cassie out of prison. The whole gang is here: Scott, Cassie, and the Van Dynes (Hank, Janet, and Hope) are back, and Janet reassures everyone that she knows what to do, given her lengthy stay in the Realm. This leads to a door being opened to reveal Murray’s appearance in a role that has yet to be revealed.
Murray is represented by the first line from the classic film: “Janet Van Dyne, I thought you were dead.” according to Collider.
As noted by The Wrap, the trailer sheds light on entire societies living in the quantum world, and Bill Murray’s character is one of those inhabitants. Joblo reveals that Murray is somehow looking after Janet while she is there.
Gamesradar has confirmed that the location for it all is a whimsical-looking city in the Quantum Realm, and it looks like Bill Murray is the person in charge.
Ant family vacation in exotic Chronopolis?
With all this in mind, perhaps the most striking is the mention of the city in the Quantum Realm. Fans with sharper memories and sharper eyesight will likely notice that the domed city was seen in the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and the Waspand many speculate that this city was Chronopolis, the headquarters of Kang himself.
Janet almost certainly stayed in this city for at least some of the time she spent in the Kingdom, so she would probably consider it a safe haven. It would appear that she has interacted with Murray’s character in the past and that they are at least relatively familiar with each other, but the exact details of their relationship remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses of the trailer note that Murray’s character is either the ruler of the city or an authoritative figure in it. Perhaps Kang has yet to take over the timeless city when the gang arrives, or Murray’s character may just be the pet dog of a time-bending warlord. If he works for Kang, it’s safe to assume that Janet doesn’t know.
If Murray isn’t working for him, then this may be the point in time (or beyond) when the Conqueror first shows up to lay claim to his base of operations. Attacking this city would give an easy path to unite the Ant family against the villain, though they might be a bit out of their league against a figure of such strength.
Ultimately, Murray’s role remains unrevealed, and it is likely that his character is an invention for the screen rather than a comic role. However, Marvel has dabbled with Kang’s henchmen in the past, like Judge Rensleyer from Loki the classic compatriot (and romantic interest) of the villain.
Fans will see it firsthand when they return to the Quantum Realm with Scott and the team.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania debuts in theaters on February 17, 2023.
