The FIA and Gran Turismo will continue to work together as long as the quality of online racing in Gran Turismo 7 improves.

Ahead of the Gran Turismo World Series esports competition kicking off today, July 23rd, the FIA has commented exclusively on its relationship with Polyphony Digital developers and the competition.

Notably, the FIA has been associated with Sony’s flagship racing title in a competitive sense since 2018 as the sanctioning body for both the Nations Cups and the Manufacturer Series. They used GT Sport platform before moving to Gran Turismo 7 this year.

This change resulted in the absence of FIA branding during the in-game qualifying rounds and at this weekend’s event. Fueling the split rumors, the FIA announced the use of the rival Assetto Corsa Competizione title for its upcoming Motorsport Games event.

“It’s not over yet,” said Frédéric Bertrand, FIA’s director of Formula E and innovative sports, when asked about the relationship between Gran Turismo and the motorsports governing body.

“Per [the] Motorsport Games [event]the difficulty we had at that point was that they weren’t necessarily ready to support the live event as we wanted because of Gran Turismo 7 and everything.

“So we agreed with them that we would work with Assetto Corsa to do this,” Bertrand explained, speaking to Motorsport Networks Formula 1 editor Jonathan Noble, who passed the comments to Traxion.GG for publication, at a media launch. the aforementioned Motorsport Games event, which will take place in France from 26 to 30 October 2022.

“But we are still working with Gran Turismo on a lot of other projects. So no, this is not the end. It’s just taking a non-exclusive approach and we think esports should be more open.

“This is what Kazunori-san and I agreed on. Agreed, and done in the perfect Japanese manner!”

Next weekend, from 30 to 31 July, in the Austrian Salzburg, in Salzburg, the personal tournament Gran Turismo World Series Showdown will take place live. It brings together new Gran Turismo talent with existing race winners and will be split over both days.

While the event is not affiliated with the FIA, representatives will be in attendance to explore the evolution of Gran Turismo 7, which we hope will lead to a return of the partnership.

“I will send my boys [to Salzburg] and if we feel that he is ready, we will continue again. And then we will probably have another project early in the first quarter of next year with Gran Turismo,” Bertrand explained.

While the details of this project have yet to be revealed, it is a clear confirmation that all is not lost when it comes to the federation and Gran Turismo once again teaming up to compete.

Since its launch, Gran Turismo 7 has suffered from problems with online play. While the rated sports mode is generally stable, the online lobbies are rife with bugs. It took four months before the ability to change lobby settings became possible, and even now the ability to set vote tracking or save settings – like in GT Sport – is missing.

“Polyphony Digital has been very honest with us. So we said, “OK, let’s simplify.” We needed something for the upcoming Motorsport Games event, so we found an alternative. Then, hopefully, they will continue development by 2023 to the level that we all expect,” continued Bertrand.

While the developers of the game continue to work on improving the competitive experience, the FIA is also looking into the global eSports rankings, taking into account developments across various racing simulation platforms.

“We would like to see the ATP of tennis moved to esports. We would like to be the ones who create the global ranking. So that drivers know at what level we are in the world and at what level they are in their region and in their country.”

Although the FIA is not present as it represents Gran Turismo’s esports events, it is still present in the Brand Central section of the game, indicating ongoing dialogue.

The pre-recorded Gran Turismo Manufacturers Cup will air today, July 23rd, followed by the Nations Cup on July 24th. A week later, a live confrontation follows, as well as a new game update with three new cars.
