one. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman leaving Fox to join ESPN could be the second most shocking move for broadcasters in 2022.
Dan Patrick revealed on his Tuesday radio show that if Charles Barkley joins the LIV Tour, he will likely leave TNT and Inside the NBAwhere he has been a regular since 2000.
“He is the most valuable voice in sports media,” Patrick said. “You’re putting all the ads in because he could lose his endorsement, a lot of these players that joined the LIV tour lost their endorsement. Charles knows he could lose them. So if you’re going after Charles Barkley, you don’t have a TV deal and you have David Feherty, what are you going to give Charles Barkley? And Charles says that he will listen to them, I think, tomorrow night and decide what he is going to do, and he may have to leave TNT. That’s why it’s a big deal. And Charles knows he may have to leave TNT to do that.”
Patrick’s producer Paul Pabst then chimed in to ask why Barkley couldn’t stay on TNT and cover golf on the side.
“I’m just sharing what I was told this morning,” Patrick replied. “Charles knows he may have to leave TNT. It would be bad for everyone.”
I asked LIV a couple of industry sources what they had heard of Barkley, and they all said the same thing: Big, big money is at stake here.
This is by no means a shock, because everyone knows about the money LIV threw at golfers. You can be sure that LIV Barkley’s proposal will be more than monstrous.
LIV does not have a television contract. Their tournaments are currently streamed on YouTube and Facebook. Bringing in Barkley could possibly get people tuned in to hear his comment, as well as help LIV possibly get a TV deal. LIV throws stupid money at Barkley because she needs Barkley.
In the meantime, Barkley has made no secret of the fact that he will do anything for the money, telling Pat McAfee a few weeks ago: “I don’t judge other people. If someone gave me $200 million, I would kill a relative.”
Sports fans and some members of the media like to say that no one watches sports for the broadcasters. This theory is sure to be tested if Barkley joins the LIV. The curiosity factor of a non-golf broadcaster who sits idle on the microphone of a fraudulent organization may well get some people tuned in.
However, the real story here is not about LIV. This is about Inside the NBA. Losing Barkley would be a disaster. A show with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal would be great, but without Barkley it wouldn’t be nearly as great. He is the one who moves the needle. He is the person that the players react to. He’s the one fans want to hear the most.
To use one of Barkley’s favorite analogies, he’s the one in control Inside the NBA bus.
