Cameron Diaz recalls being “used as a drug dealer” in the 1990s, just weeks before her acting career took off from the female lead in the comedy-fiction blockbuster The Mask.
It comes as the 49-year-old actor is set to return to the big screen after an eight-year hiatus, preparing to star alongside Jamie Foxx in the aptly titled comedy Back in Business.
Reminiscing about the early days of her career, the actress was a poor model in Paris before taking a job where she “was a drug smuggler in Morocco.”
Mule: Cameron Diaz, 49, claimed she was once “used” to smuggle substances from France to Morocco in the 1990s.
Speaking on the Second Life podcast, Cameron explained that she raised enough money to move to Paris and start modeling, but was unable to find work there.
She explained to podcast host Hillary Kerr, “I was there for a year and didn’t work a day. I couldn’t find a job to save my life. Then I got a job, but I really think I was a mule who smuggled drugs into Morocco – I swear to God.”
Cameron admitted that she did not know that she was transporting prohibited substances before arriving at the airport, and upon learning about it, she began to panic.
Big break: The drug job came just weeks before her acting career kicked off with the female lead in the comedy fantasy film The Mask.
Leading Lady: She co-starred with Jim Carrey in the 1994 hit after claiming she “didn’t act” when approached for a job as an aspiring model.
I continue: “It was the early nineties, and they gave me a locked suitcase that contained my “suits”.
“I am a fair-haired, blue-eyed girl from Morocco. I’m in ripped jeans and platform boots, with my hair down – it’s really unsafe. I told them: “I don’t know, it’s not mine, I have no idea whose.” It was the only job I got in Paris.”
After avoiding at least a ten-year prison sentence for drug dealing, Cameron left the suitcase with officials when she returned to France, calling it her first and last job in Paris.

But after a successful escape, Cameron finally hit big in Los Angeles when she was approached by a casting agent looking for a “bomb”.
The producers were looking for a female lead to star alongside Jim Carrey in the 1994 hit The Mask.
While they were hoping to land Playmate and cover girl Anna Nicole Smith for the role, they expanded their horizons to other potential stars.
But after attempting a career as a catalog model, Cameron admitted she was skeptical of the possibility, telling a casting agent, “I don’t act, that’s not what I do.”

To Hollywood: A few weeks after this ordeal, she was offered a breakout role in the fantasy comedy The Mask that brought her fame (pictured on The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno in 1994).
“I just started my period. There was no way I could wear anything sexy that day. I’m like, “Are you kidding me?” recalls the beautiful blonde.
But after calling director Chuck Russell “great,” she explained that he told her, “You’re my Tina Carlisle and I’m going to groom you for the role,” before offering it to her a week later.
Since then, the actress has had starring roles in blockbuster films like Vacation, What’s Happening in Vegas, and Charlie’s Angels.
Retirement: But in 2014, Cameron decided to step away from acting and pursue family life with her husband Benji Maddox (pictured) and daughter Raddix.
