Following the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote in June, Apple released beta firmware to developers for several AirPods models, including the second generation AirPods, third generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Apple updated this firmware today and the version number has changed from 5A5282d to 5A5304a.

The updated AirPods firmware is for developers only, who can download the software from the More Downloads page on Apple’s developer website. Beta installation requires an iPhone running iOS 16 beta, a Mac running macOS Ventura beta, Xcode 14 beta, and supported AirPods.

Developers must pair AirPods with ‌iPhone‌, connect ‌iPhone‌ to Mac with a Lightning cable, run Xcode 14 beta on Mac, go to Settings → Developer, and select Pre-Beta Firmware under AirPods Testing. Subsequent updates are delivered over the air after the pre-test option is enabled.

According to Apple, the beta firmware includes auto-switching improvements as well as bug and stability fixes. The software will eventually roll out to all AirPods once testing is complete, and it could be released this fall along with ‌iOS 16‌, iPadOS 16, ‌macOS Ventura‌, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9.
