The world’s top 50 list, years after it updated its voting body and rules after criticizing sexism and favoritism for euro-centric, male-driven menu tasting spots and the ever-winning Copenhagen Noma, has lifted the high-end Copenhagen restaurant again with tasting menu. in slot number one.
Geranium by Chef Rasmus Kofoed, one of Denmark’s most celebrated culinary establishments, was named “Best Restaurant in the World” in the first year René Redzepi’s Noma dropped out of the list. Noma took first place in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2021: in 2019, the World’s Top 50 organization introduced a rule change that restaurants cannot win a second time, but Noma still managed to take the final victory after closing . and moved to a new location. Kofoed’s Geranium is one of two three-Michelin-starred restaurants in Denmark, along with Noma. Located on the eighth floor of Copenhagen’s national football stadium, it announced last year that it would be ditching the already small amount of meat on its around $437 menu to focus on seafood and vegetables.
Central in Lima came in second and Disfrutar in Barcelona came in third. The results were announced during a ceremony in London hosted by Stanley Tucci. Prior to the ceremony, the World’s 50 Best confirmed that Russian-language restaurants would not be on the list this year due to the country’s attacks on Ukraine. A spokesman told Eater: “We do not hold any restaurant or bar personally responsible for the actions of their government, and we recognize all those in Russia who have boldly condemned the actions of their leaders. However, by including Russian restaurants or bars in our high-profile lists, we will implicitly support hotel tourism in Russia by increasing revenues in the country and indirectly supporting the government through taxation… As an organization, we do not believe at this time to properly promote Russia as a place to eat or drink.” This change effectively removed the creators of the 2021 list from White Rabbit and Twins Garden.
In the 20-year history of the list, only European or North American restaurants have ranked among the top restaurants. No South American or Asian restaurant has ever risen to number one, and there is none on the list of the top 50 restaurants in the Middle East. The list does not include restaurants from India, a country of 1.38 billion people. The only restaurant from Africa, a continent of 1.28 billion people, is a South African establishment experimenting with Japanese methods.
In addition to the top 50 list, René Frank from Coda in Berlin was named the best pastry chef in the world; Leonor Espinosa is recognized as the best female chef in the world, and Josep Roca received the award for “Best Sommelier in the World”. The Art of Hospitality Award went to New York restaurant Atomix: Atomix was also ranked 33rd on the list of top-rated US restaurants. The Icon award went to Kenyan restaurant Wavira Njiru.
